(Integer Multiplication) - Part II

Multiplication of Integers
This virtual manipulative allows the user to visualize the product of two integers.

The array shows the product of two integers, with height equal to one factor and the width equal to the other factor. The colored array may be considered as groups in two ways (horizontal or vertical), as displayed in the text at the right, and the result of the multiplication is also shown. To change either of the factors, use the vertical and horizontal sliders, located inside the array.

Since this manipulative allows either (or both) of the factors to be negative, the color of the product shows whether the product is positive or negative. If both factors are positive, then, the product is positive (blue). If the factors have opposite signs (one positive and one negative), then the product appears as negative (red) in either the second or fourth quadrant, but if both factors are negative, then the product, in the third quadrant, is positive.

(Integer Multiplication) - Part I

Multiplication of Integers
We have discussed integers in one of our previous posts. We discussed integer number set, positive, negative and non-negative integers. In this post, we will be discussing multiplication of two integers using the number line. The following rules are applied for multiplication involving integers:

  • The multiplication of two positive integers is always positive
  • The multiplication of two negative integers is always positive
  • The multiplication to one positive and one negative integer is always negative

Keeping in mind the above rules, we can model integer multiplication on a number line. Jumps of equal length on a number line reflect skip counting – a strategy that students use in early stages of multiplying. For example, a number line might be used to compute 4 × 3.
Later, students can use open number lines (number lines on which only significant numbers are indicated) to show multiplication with larger numbers. The following number line shows 4×14.
The applet below model the above concept. The sliders can be used to create different sets of multiplication expressions between -5 and +5.

(Area Model of Multiplication)

Multiplication
The development of multiplication concepts represents significant growth in students’ mathematical thinking. With an understanding of multiplication, students recognize how groups of equal size can be combined to form a whole quantity. Developing a strong understanding of multiplication concepts in the early classes builds a foundation for comprehending division concepts and algebraic thinking.

In the primary grades, students explore the meaning of multiplication by combining groups of equal size. Initially, students count objects one by one to determine the product in a multiplication situation. For example, students might use counters/pebbles to represent a problem involving three groups of four, and then count each counter/pebble to determine the total number.
With experience, students learn to use more sophisticated counting and reasoning strategies, such as using skip counting and using known addition facts (e.g., for 3 groups of 6: 6 plus 6 is 12, and 6 more is 18). Later, students develop strategies for learning basic multiplication facts and use these facts to perform multiplication computations efficiently.

An array (an arrangement of objects in rows and columns) provides a useful model for multiplication. In an array, the number of items in each row represents one of the factors in the multiplication expression, while the number of columns represents the other factor. Replacing objects in an array by unit or 1 × 1 squares introduces the area model of multiplication. This is illustrated below for 3 × 4.
The GeoGebra applet below shows the area model of multiplication. Use the blue and red sliders to create different numbers and count the total number of squares to get the result of the multiplication of two numbers.

Complex Numbers - Multiplication

If z1 = a+ib and z2 = r+is are two complex numbers , then their multiplication           z1 * z2 can be expressed as [(ar - bs)+i(as+br)].

Let us see what happens geometrically when we multiply two complex numbers? To answer this question, it is advantageous to express complex numbers in their polar form.

With this approach we find that the product of two complex numbers w = r (cos α + i sin α) and   z = s (cos β + i sin β) is given by w.z = r s [(cos (α+β) + i sin (α+β)].

This means that, when multiplying two complex numbers w and z, we multiply their moduli and we add the angles which w and z make with the positive x-direction.
