Perpendicular Bisector of a Line Segment

To construct the perpendicular bisector of a line segment
For this construction, we are given a line segment of some length. We need to construct its perpendicular bisector with the help of ruler and compass. This can be achieved in the following steps:

Step 1 – Draw a line segment PQ of some length.

Step 2 – With P as center and radius equal to more than half the length PQ, draw a circle with the help of a compass.

Step 3 – With Q as center and radius as in step 2, draw another circle which interest with the first circle at points A and B.

Step 4 – Join points A and B. This will intersect PQ at N.

Step 5 – With the help of divider, check that points P and Q are at equal distance from point N. Also, check the angles PNA and QNA are right angles. Thus, AB is the perpendicular bisector of given segment PQ.

The applet below shows the construction of perpendicular bisector. The points P and Q can be dragged with the help of the mouse to see the construction for different lengths of segment PQ. The steps of construction can be viewed with the help of slider STEP.

Construction-Copy a given Line Segment

Constructing a copy of a given line segment
Let a line segment LM be given, we need to construct a line segment PQ equal in length to the given segment LM with the help of ruler and compass. This can be done in the following steps:

Step 1 – Put the compass pointer on point L and take the pencil end to point M. The opening of the compass gives the length LM of the given line segment.

Step 2 – Draw any line l1 and take a point P on it. Without disturbing the opening of the compass in Step 1, put the compass pointer on P.

Step 3 – Draw an arc (which is a part of a circle) with the help of pencil at another end. Let this arc cut the line l1 at point Q. Now PQ is the copy of given line segment LM.

In the applet below, points L or M may be dragged to change the length of the given line segment LM and its effect on the length of constructed line segment PQ may be seen. Use slider STEP to see different steps of the construction.

Division of Line Segment-Unequal Parts

Let AB be the given line segment to be divided into unequal parts say 1/6 ,1/5 ,1/ 4 ,1/3 ,1/ 2 .
  • Draw a line segment AB of given length.
  • Draw perpendiculars AD and BC at points A and B. Complete the rectangle ABCD
  • Join diagonals AC and BD intersecting at E.
  • Draw perpendicular from E on AB and find intersection point F.
  • Now AF = 1/ 2 AB
  •  Join D and F. The segment FD intersects the diagonal AC at G. Drop perpendicular from G to A. Then AH = 1/3 AB
  • Similarly make constructions as given in the figure to obtain 1/ 4 AB , 1/5 AB and 1/6 AB

GeoGebra Tutorial - 6 Triangle and Angles

In this tutorial we will construct a triangle and measure its internal angles.
  • Click on File Menu and select New. (This will open a new GeoGebra window)
  • Click on the drop down arrow of the Line through Two Points and choose the Segment between Two Points button

  • Construct a triangle using Segment between Two Points button. You will see in the Algebra Window , the three segments (sides of triangle) are represented by their lengths.
  • To see which length corresponds to which side , click on the Move Tool (arrow) and hover the mouse over one of the sides to see the corresponding length light up.
  • Now to measure internal angles of the triangle , select the Angle Button        and click once on vertices B , A and C in that order. This will give you measure of ∠BAC. (Make sure that you select the vertices in clockwise direction. Anti-clockwise selection will give you reflex angle.
  • Similarly, measure ∠CBA and ∠ACB.
  •  Now, drag the vertices using Move Button (Arrow). If you drag enough, you will notice reflex angles appearing. To stop this, right click on an angle in Algebra or Geometry Window, and choose Object Properties.Under Basic Tab un-check the Allow Reflex Angle check box and close the Object Properties box.
  • Check your settings have been applied by dragging the vertices of your triangle.
